Joyce Lim is back in Singapore(: I left for taipei last wednesday for a comp to build structures that could withstand shaking (similar to earthquakes) and i must say i really had alot of fun! plus i learnt alot of stuff too.. i really thank God for allowing me to go through such a valuable experience!! i made 2 new friends and got closer to 1 friend(: juanmin, jiali and zan are my team members who went along with me and im glad i had them in my team! plus mr ng and ms tan who took such great care of us, appreciate them!! ok i shall type out my journal:D anw the main purpose is to update my blog laaa.. dun read it if u're not interested ok(:
DAY 1
Hello! I'm on my bed now writing what happened today. Our team departed from Singapore at 830am and i was really happy to take the Singapore airlines! i did not feel tht giddy and i actually managed to watch half of 200pound beauty! Really a cool and nice movie! i sat between zan and jiali while juanmin sat with the 2tchers. Upon arrival, 2 taiwanese guys directed us to the bus and off we left for Chientan overseas youth recreation centre! the hostel was really big and grand.. almost like a hotel seriously! 4 of us shared a 6-bed rom:D and the toilet was so hotel-ish! we then planned to spend our free time to head towards taipei city mall.. we took the train from jiantan station! it was like 5 stops and our ticket cost NT20 each.. cheaper than singapore loh. We had our yummy dinner at this small restaurant that sells all kinds of fried cutlet. I ordered fish cullet and i really enjoyed it:D After which we went to search for the easy mall but to no avail:/ We ended taking the train back to Jiantan and spent 50mins at the shihlin night market:D i bought 12 pairs of socks and a shirt! hehe hope the person will like it! we returned to our hostel and bought big bottles of water at the convenient store.. yep and that pretty ends our day 1 in singapore. Big 2 time till we fall aslp!:D
DAY 2
it's a brand new day! we set our alarm at 645am and we were done by 715am. haha we went to play bball game at the mini arcade! it was really fun, though my hands ached after a few games:p ok breakfast wasnt too bad afterall.. im so glad i get to drink taiwan's soyabean ok:D its really nice and i felt really warm! we left for taizhong via the bus that was arranged for us and i swear the journey was damn long! it took around3-4 hrs.. We went to the shihkang dam and it was really burning hot.. we perspired like crazy and even y bagstrap was partially wet la. btw, we all got some ugly tans here and there. the dam looked really magnificent and powerful.. the scene was WHOAAA nice. another 1hr bus ride brought us to the 921 earthquake museum and the place showed how the place tht was once guangfu junior high sch has been destroyed by the 7.3 earthquake tht hit JIJI. we managed to see the destroyed classrooms n the collapsed sch. it was super disastrous and scary... (i never want to experience an earthquake) other than tht, we got to do some hands-on activities tht allowed us to gain a better understanding of how buildings collapse and what could be done to reinforce them. For example, a low frequency will cause a taller building to shake more while a high frequency earthquake will cause the shorter buildings to shake more. After which, we headed back to taipei to visit taipei101. this is my 2nd time there and i thought the experience was rather different. hahaha i was reminded of the korean/jap guy the 6 of us prev were looking at:p also, the audio tour thing has been modified!! its no longer tht bulky! fyi, the lift took only 37sec to reach the 89th floor! we then went to eslite bookstore to shop for books and dabao beef noodles back to our hostel to makan! haha i bought 4 chinese bks in total and it only cost $38! i am super happy:D will give to elmo and lime. yupyup anw there was a bus tht sent us back to the hostel and we had our beef noodles!! it was yummyyyyy:D the beef was tender! lastly, we went to the lobby to print our poster needed for the comp and yah! i forgot to mention tht there was a buddy(Lin) tht was attached to us.. shes a really sweet girl and she lived in singapore once for 3yrs!
`i thank God for keeping us safe and loving us. I pray tht u take care of my family back in singapore and i believe u haf alr done tht! in the mighty name of jesus, Amen!
DAY 3
Today, there wasnt much activity for us. But we started the day badly as all of us overslept:/ both tchers were quite... disappointed? haha we had a hard time gulping down the hot cup of soyabean in front of them:p also, breakfast was almost the same today! haha anw we proceeded to start on our timed practice in our room. We started at approx 820am and its rather unproductive laaa. i guess. mr ng came over to gif some advice and provide us help. at around 1, juanmin had a bad stomachache and cldnt join us for lunch. we went to the cafe right in front of our hostel and i thought their hotdog bread was really good! yumyum! Nt100 only:D after which, we got ramen for juanmin and the taiwanese waitress were really nice! they allowed us to bring the utensils and bowl up to our room! so sweet rite(: we had a great laugh when mr ng suggested us to pour away the soup into the toilet bowl. we explained to him tht even tissue paper used for big business are supposed to be thrown into the bin instead of the toilet bowl. The way mr ng kept saying tht its disgusting was damn farni laaa.. luffed till i teared laa. he even asked the receptionist about it! it was damn hilarious. yep, after our construction, we left for the banquet tht was organized to welcome the foreign students. haha i must say the food was good and i ate alot alot of brocolli:D every team had to put up a perf and we had to think so hard can! singapore poly n NUS were smart enuff to pon it:p we wanted to play ke ren lai with cups, but ms tan suggested us to sing Dedication instead(: overall, i thot the banquet was not v meaningful for us. oh but my fav perf was the hakka by the new zealand team! it was damn cool and power! yala, then it was back to hostel and getting our early slp for the actual comp tmr:D
DAY 4
hehe we werent late today! although i had a hard time trying to get out of bed, i managed to do so:D breakfast was the sameeeee, and the music played was the sameeee too. before leaving for the comp site, we spent 10mins playing with machine tht picks up soft toys!!! it was damn farni! each of us had a turn, but we dint succeed at all:p
yep, then off we went to the comp site! over there, we finally saw all the taiwan teams. the environment was quite stressful la, but it had a friendly feel too:D i like it when everyone is doing sth together!! i didnt really treat it as a comp, but a platform for us to perf and haf fun:D we sat at our allocated table for 6 1/2 hrs straight to complete our structure and i think its really tiring! we were really tired after tht and the worst was when we had to rush so much at the very last hour. singapore poly guys were really nice to help us mount our poster! they had extra wood to support our poster board and hey did it up for us.. really am thankful for their help:D
our structure was examined and the mass was 541.3g! haha we werent the heaviest at least:p after which, the shuttle bus took us back to the hostel and 4 of us had a quick change of our bottoms before leaving for wufenpu! its a really big shopping heaven! its like 4 times the size of bugis street and the clothes they sell are so much cheaper and nicer!!! i was so happy seeing the models being dressed up in such trendy and pretty clothes u noe! they were really pretty and i really had the urge to buy all of them:D in the end, i got a pink m&m shirt and a vest outfit for myself! juan and jiali got the m&m shirts in diff colours too:D ohyah we ate xue3 pian4 bing1 also! it was super yummy! its like sliced green tea icecream!! WHEEE GOOD. it was really good, wasnt creamy at all:D everyone should try it when yall go to taiwan alright! NT60 for 1 bowl!
DAY 5
*hehe im really lazy to type this out. all i can say is the stoopit typhoon stopped us from shopping. and we got the creative poster design award!*
